Richard Henson began teaching music in 2000 and has experienced nearly every side of the profession since, performing, teaching at the university level, publishing articles for music journals, and authoring a method book on upright frame drumming. He spent more than ten years touring the country performing concerts and leading clinics at colleges and universities before opening Rhythm & Grooves in August 2021 with a clear vision: build a school where students have access to genuinely qualified educators and truly individualized instruction, whatever their goals may be. Richard also serves as the percussion coordinator for Munford Middle and Munford High School in Munford, TN. 

As an active performer, Richard has appeared with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Macon Symphony Orchestra, Carrollton Symphony Orchestra, Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of the Mountains, Chattanooga Choral Arts Society, East Tennessee Brass, Cleveland Jazz Quartet, Jamaica Me Happy, Classical Mystery Tour and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He has presented solo recitals at the University of South Alabama, Ouachita Baptist University, Valdosta State University, the University of Tennessee at Martin, Southern Adventist University, Lee University and the Amro Music Recital Hall, and has led percussion clinics at institutions including the University of Memphis, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Furman University and Tennessee Tech University.

Richard holds a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from Lee University and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. He is a performing artist and clinician for Innovative Percussion, Remo drumheads and Sabian Cymbals.That same standard of musicianship and teaching is what Richard brought with him when he built Rhythm & Grooves — a school where every instructor is not just qualified to teach, but genuinely accomplished in their craft.
