An electric guitar uses pickups to convert string vibrations into an electrical signal, which is then amplified through a speaker. Unlike acoustic, the tone, volume and effects are all adjustable.
Electric guitars give players a much wider range of sounds, from clean and mellow to distorted and heavy. Electric guitar is at the heart of rock, blues, metal, country and R&B. It is the instrument behind some of the most iconic sounds in music history — and Memphis has deep roots in all of it.

While it’s the same shape as a guitar, it serves a different role by supporting the melody and enhancing the beat of the drums.

Lesson Scheduling
Lessons are thirty (30) minutes each and booked in monthly blocks. One class per week, but you can always book more classes.

Should my child start on acoustic or electric?
It depends on what excites them. Acoustic is a great foundation and it builds finger strength fast. Electric is perfectly fine to start on too, especially if your child has a specific artist or sound in mind. Our instructors will help you figure out the right fit at registration.
What size guitar does my child need?
Guitar sizing is based on age and height, not skill level. Younger students typically start on a half or three quarter size guitar. Not sure what your child needs? Our instructors can guide you before your first lesson so you are not guessing at the music store.
I have never played a chord in my life — where do I even start?
At Rhythm & Grooves! Complete beginners are some of our favorite students to work with. Your first lesson starts with the basics — how to hold the guitar, your first chord, and something fun to play before you leave.
What is the difference between acoustic and electric lessons?
Acoustic lessons focus on fingerpicking, strumming, chord transitions and tone through touch. Electric lessons bring in amplification, effects, riffs, lead technique, and soloing. Both share the same fundamentals, but each has its own distinct skill set.
Can I switch between acoustic and electric?
Absolutely. Many students start on one and eventually explore the other. The foundational skills transfer — your instructor will help you make that transition smoothly when the time is right.
